LPKFF research
Position in the Physical Layer of AI thesis
LPKFF is a Parking sleeve position and an active rotation candidate. LPKF Laser & Electronics is a German maker of laser-based manufacturing systems used in PCB production, microelectronics, and solar cell etching. The position has Photonics-adjacency (laser-based manufacturing) but the customer mix is industrial-electronics, not AI infrastructure. As of 2026-05-05, the position was down -13.85 percent, the largest drag in the book by percent.
Quinn's book opened LPKFF as a Pivot but the position has been re-categorized to Parking / rotation-candidate per the manifesto v2 sleeve definitions. Sized at <1.5% of book per portfolio snapshot.
Recent catalysts (last 30 to 60 days)
Limited material catalysts. Notes:
- Q1 2026 revenue light. PCB-segment customer demand softened on consumer electronics weakness.
- Solar etching system orders down. Chinese solar capacity build-out has been slowing; LPKF's solar segment compressed.
- Cost reduction program. Management announced cost cuts in Q1 to defend operating margin.
- No AI infrastructure catalyst. LPKF does not have material exposure to datacenter or AI silicon manufacturing.
The thesis (what has to be true)
1. PCB customer demand recovers in 2H 2026 as consumer electronics cycles back. 2. The solar etching segment finds a non-Chinese growth lane. 3. Cost reduction protects operating margin through the cycle trough. 4. Or: the position rotates to a better-fitting Physical Layer name.
Kill vectors
- Continued PCB weakness. Consumer electronics cycle could stay weak through 2026.
- Solar capacity overhang. Chinese capacity is fully built; the etching demand could stay compressed structurally.
- Parking sleeve rotation. Position size is small enough that rotation is the natural exit. If a higher-conviction Photonics position opens (Aeluma deeper, Lumentum at price), LPKFF is a candidate to fund the rotation.
Layer context
Photonics layer per current metadata, but the position is in the Parking sleeve, NOT the Photonics anchor sleeve. The label is structural acknowledgement of the laser technology, not thesis fit.
Position discipline
- Parking sleeve rules: smallest sizing, rotation-tolerant.
- No fixed trim or kill triggers at the position level.
- Active rotation candidate. If the position stays down for 4 consecutive quarters with no improving thesis, rotate.
Moat 5. Asym 5. Both moderate. The moat is the laser-system installed base in the European electronics manufacturing supply chain. The asym is bounded by the slow-growth industrial-electronics profile.
Disclosure: LPKFF does NOT pass the signature line test. It is in the book as a parking position. Quinn rarely covers LPKFF in public content.
Real money. Real position. Real receipts.
